Flat Glass Manufacturing Costs Rise 1.1% in January, Continuing Upward Trend

The new year ushered in higher costs for glass and glass product manufacturing. According to the latest United States Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index (PPI), the glass and glass product manufacturing index rose 1.1% in January. This followed a revised 0.1% drop in December and a 0.7% increase in November.

The year-to-year PPI for glass and glass product manufacturing remained elevated at 2.7% in January compared to January 2024. The PPI measures the prices of goods and services at the wholesale level in the U.S., from raw materials to finished products.

Overall, U.S. producer prices rose in January, reflected by the PPI’s 0.4% increase after a revised 0.5% jump in December. On a year-to-year basis, the PPI increased by 3.5% after increasing by 3.3% in December. The PPI update follows the consumer price report, which shows consumer prices increased by 0.5% in January, the most significant increase in over a year.

Flat Glass—The price of flat glass rose by 1% in January, following a revised 0.3% increase in December. On a year-to-year basis, flat glass prices were up 1.8% compared to January 2024. Additionally, the commodity of “other glass products, made by flat glass producers” jumped 1.8% in January. Year-to-year prices for the commodity were up 1.8% compared to January 2024.

Flat Glass Manufacturing—In tandem with increased costs for flat glass products, the cost of manufacturing flat glass rose by 1.9% in January. This follows a 0.3% increase in December. Prices remained up 3.8% compared to January 2024.

Fabricated Structural Metal Products—The price for fabricated structural metal products increased by 0.3% in January. This follows a 0.1% decrease in December and a 0.4% increase in November. On a year-to-year basis, fabricated structural metal product prices were down 1.2% in January compared to January 2024.

Ornamental and Architectural Metalwork—The price of ornamental and architectural metalwork products remained flat in January. The last price adjustment was in November (0.7%). On a year-to-year basis, ornamental and architectural metalwork prices were up 8.4% compared to January 2024, a slight improvement when comparing prices between December 2024 and December 2023 (9.7%).

Metal Windows—Metal window prices were steady in January. Prices for the commodity have remained flat for three out of the past five months. The last significant fluctuation was in November (-1.2%). On a year-to-year basis, metal window prices were up 0.6% in January compared to January 2024. Metal windows include window frames comprised of aluminum or steel.

Metal Doors and Frames—Prices for metal doors and frames dropped by 0.1% in January. Much like metal windows, there have not been major price fluctuations over the past five months, outside of October’s 1.6% jump. Year-to-year prices for the commodity were up 2.6% in January compared to January 2024.

Builders’ Hardware—The prices for builders’ hardware, including door and window hardware, were unchanged for the eighth consecutive month. Year-to-year prices for builders’ hardware products were up 1.8% in January compared to January 2024. The builders’ hardware commodity includes lock units, key blanks and door and window hardware.
